Any webcam recommendations please?

  Pineman100 18:37 21 Feb 2009

I run XP SP3 on my 5-yr-old Packard Bell desktop.

I've finally agreed to my wife's demands to install a webcam, so that she can make Skype video calls to our grandchildren regularly.

I'd prefer to have a webcam with a built-in microphone. Does anyone have any recommendations or warnings about my choice of webcam, please?

Aim for one with the ability to achieve at least 640x480 (or even 1.3MP) resolution - it will be more than sufficient.

If you got to Staples or even some of the better discount type high street stores, you can pick up models by Trust, Labtec etc for a tenner or less.

My XP computer has 1GB of memory and a 3.2 gigaherz Pentium 4. My broadband connection averages about 2Mb.

Do you think I'll be OK with a full 1.3MP camera, or should I choose one with a lower resolution?

A 2MB connection is more than adequate as is your system.

I used to use a Creative 640x480 webcam on dial-up...:-)

The point about the 1.3MP type webcam, at least in the case of my current Trust model, is that if you use it as a capture device the quality is that much better.

Without any doubt there is only one webcam worth getting IMHO - Quickcam Pro9000.

Resolution from 320x240 up to 8Mpix.

That's great. I'm most grateful for your advice - as always!

TT - the above post was for Stuartli, but the same to you, too!

Your welcome - I have the Pro9000, it really is just Superb, and of course with built-in mic.

I use the Logitech Pro 9000 its really good one to have.

No doubt it will be first class, but for basic video conferencing seems a bit over the top...:-)

It is currently half-price at Amazon! I use it a lot for video-chats to relatives and friends.
