Toshiba are my favourites very solidly built and a good quality feel.

If its Vista you get and it probably will be make sure it has a decent processor (dual core) and 2 gig of memory.

The one at Currys that GEEKSTA linked to looks very nice for the money.

I'd go for the Toshiba in GEEKSTA's link. I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop and it's very nice indeed.

My other choice would be one of the Lenovo (neé IBM) Thinkpad R series, they're not cutting edge spec and won't win many beauty contests, but you won't get a sturdier laptop anywhere for the price.

For a bit less money, and several less features, The Lenovo 3000 range of consumer laptops are garnering a lot of praise click here

Samsung are flavour of the month with PCA. Check out their recent reviews top left

"Samsung already has the budget laptops market sewn up with the deliciously priced £399 Samsung R60. But the excellent Samsung R700-A003UK is itself something of a bargain given the specifications on board."

The R700 is £599, so it's a bit over your budget, but it might be worth finding the extra cash
