antivirus for low tech computers

i recently had to reinstall os and i dun noe what really good antivirus i should buy, but all these new ones seem to require like 1gig ram and whatnot which i do not want to lag me computer with, my computer is 1.6 giz 700ram and 80gig any suggestions for a good antivirus?

xp, and i dun plan on downloading in the past i have download and seem to have attracted viruses after it expires. i forgot which one i was using before because someone did it for me. i remember it being symantec and it seems to 'quarenteen' the virius.

Fruit Bat /\0/\ has already suggested two perfectly adequate free AV programs. Both are as good as each and don't "expire".

I don't know about AVG but Avast also updates automatically.

However, if you don't have any AV at the moment, I wouldn't think it wise to use the internet to download either program.

Suggest you ask a friend to download the .exe file to a USB pen drive for you and then load onto your PC from there.
