Anti virus software

I have been using Trend Internet security for a number of years and the only problem I have is the amount of time taken on startup before I can access programs.
I have just installed W7 on another drive and am dual booting between Os`s.
I`ve installed AVS free on W7 and find that it dosen`t cause any slowdown.
Is AVG as good as Trend as my subs soon need renewing and I use Trend on 3 PC`s.Or is trend better??

I really do not see the need to pay for anti-virus software on a Home PC.

I prefer Avast but AVG is fine.
