Another faulty CD Rewriter...

I'm having problems with a (another) new CD Rewriter. This is already a replacement for a faulty drive, but this seems to be causing me more problems.

It’s a Lite-On SOHR-5238S and I’m using Nero 6.6.0.8. The drive is installed as a secondary master and there is no slave.

I’m intermittently getting verification errors from Nero. I also use MD5 files to verify CDs after they’ve been burnt. These are hanging or failing when being checked on the resultant CDs.

The log file contains the following:

#32 SectorVerify 20 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 9415
Read errors from sector 209026 to 209027

I’ve tried both Memorex (52x) and Sony (52x) and I’ve been burning at 48x.

I can’t imagine it being a problem with the PC as another drive caused no problems before it was passed on to a friend and was the exact same model.

I’m pulling my hair out in frustration! Am I going to have to send another drive back? Are CD Rewriters really that poorly produced now?

Any ideas what else the problem could be?

Read this click here;1399380154;fp;1024;fpid;3

And try slower burning and maybe different disc`s

Sorry you will have to copy and paste the black bit of link in after you click here.

Does it work if you turn off DMA for this device?

I've never had success at very high speed disc burning.

Even though I have 52x burners, I never go faster than 32x and more often only 24x. Are you that concerned if your disc takes 2 minutes to burn instead of 1?

Notwithstanding the (perhaps theoretical and OTT) capabilities of your burner and your discs, try burning at a lower speed as dadyassa suggests.

I do not think you should be so unlucky to have a second faulty CD burner but you never know!

Suggestions by Lazer157 is worth a try. My suggestions are:

1. If you are burning Audio/video then you should burn them with a lower speed arround X8/16.Data should be OK.

2.Go to Device Manger and double click on IDE Secondary Controller. IDE Properties page will open. Select Advance Settings tab.

3.Check if Transfer Mode is: DMA if Available;

4. What is the Current Transfer Mode?

Is it "Ultra DMA Mode 2, if it is click on the drop down arrow (Refer to 3) and select PIO Mode only.
NOTE: In this mode you must not use the computer unless you have finished the burning cd.
If in doubt about the suggestions, please drop a line. You can always reverse the above procedure.

Thanks for all the advice.

I've uninstalled Nero and reinstalled, I've checked the IDE ports for bent pins and I've replaced the IDE cable.

I decided to try burning at a slower speed (32x) to start with.

First CD seemed to be okay. Verified successfully by Nero and MD5 files passed.

Second disc produced numerous verification errors which were reported by Nero. A sample follows:

I'm using the lastest drivers from nVidia for the IDE controller:
NVIDIA nForce 2 ATA Controller (v2.6) - Driver Version: 5.10.2600.446

Sorry, no time to read all this.

Once i couldnt copy music from windows media player. Thought it was my cd-rewriter. Loaded realplayer, and hey presto it works.

Might not always be a prob with you PC, after all, the media players are FREE, and dont come with a gaurentee...

itunes has been the best all round for me, only problem is, theres no stop button hehe

  Master.mind 22:37 23 Mar 2005

I've uninstalled the Nvidia IDE drivers. Now using the default ones from Microsoft.

So far seven CDs burnt without problems. Think that must have been the problem.

Have you tried a new Ribbon cable
