I've used both AVG and Avast as suggested by rawprawn and they both work well. But don't be tempted to install both otherwise you might end up with a pc which operates about as fast as a slug on beta blockers. You've not said what other security software you use...but the AV progs above are no substitute for good realtime Antimalware and Firewall progs. One mix that works well for me (all free) is Avast (antivirus), Microsoft Antispyware (antimalware) and Zone Alarm (firewall).

use one a/v and a selection of malware/spyware.

I myself use spywareblaster, A2 squared, adaware, AVG anti-virus, and zonealarm firewall, all to good effect.
