amount of spam received

AitchBEE's post click here reminded me of a curious situation regarding the number of spam messages I receive. From 2000-2008, I was on a dial-up connection with BT. I used to receive very little spam, about 3 or 4 messages a week. In 2008 I upgraded to broadband (Virgin cable), and almost immediately I started to receive loads of the litle devils, up to 10 per day, NOT to the new Virgin email account, but to my old BT one. Can anyone explain why?

When you changed from a dial-up to a broadband cable connection you almost certainly started to use the internet more. You visited mores sites, and increased the chances that your email address was being captured.

Perhaps you also started to give your email address to more people.

I happens, but if that's not the reason it's difficult to imagine what else is.

Have a look at Mailwasher. It allows you to block/blacklist senders. DO NOT BOUNCE however as this provide info that the spam has found a live account.

Mailwasher checks your mail at the server and gives you a chance to delete before download.
