alpha channels

I am having trouble keeping what I have heard are called alpha channels present in an image when switching file formats. From .dds ----> .bmp
and back. Is there any program that will allow me to keep them and not delete them on transfer?

I know nothing at all about this subject, but scanning through earlier postings to see if any had no replies, I found this one and did a bit of Googling. This page suggests that you have to have a second BMP file to hold the alpha channel data click here

.... and this page says that for alpha channel data you need 32-bits (4 channels of 8-bits R, G, B and alpha). You are probably converting to 24-bit (8-bits each of R, G and B)
