AGP x8 on a x4

  Madrat 21:19 10 Feb 2011

Without actually trying it, how can I tell if an AGP x8 graphics card will work on an AGP x4 motherboard?

ATi radeon 9200Se made by His.

Not got the motherboard yet but will probable be a socket A.

They are usually backwards compatible, which means it'll work but at the slower x4 speed - not that you'll notice any difference.

What motherboard is it going to be exactly - make & model? It would be much better with this info. G

Thats the problem at the moment I don't know until I've got it, depends what I can scrounge or get off ebay, as long as its Micro ATX and takes ddr ram.

Have a look at the motherboard manufacturer's website of the ones you're considering.

If this info (i.e. AGP x8/x4) is not mentioned in the specs, it may be in the manual. So download the PDF manual & have a look. If no manual available or you simply cannot find out for sure, leave that one & go for another motherboard - and so on.

At least that's how I would do it :-), G

will do thanks

You need to take extra care as Volts may differ, and may not be supported by the motherboard

Come to think of it, practically any AGP 8x/4x motherboard will work with your 9200SE GPU.

But I can understand if you want to be 100% sure before committing to buying one. G

Yep don't want to fry ether of them or find it wont work.

The 9200 or 9250 is available as a PCI card. This would remove the uncertainty of AGP x4/x8.

That's true scotty, but it looks like he already has an AGP 9200SE? G

Yep already have the card.
