i have an nvidia fx 9550 graphics card & would like to upgrade to something better that would be able to play f.e.a.r.i have all the right specs apart from a pci slot.anyone any ideas?

Assuming your PSU is a decent branded one and at least 450w, then the best graphics card at the moment on AGP is a GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB see click here for an idea of price.

If you fancy ATI, then there are still some ATI Radeon X850 XT's around. See click here for examples of price etc.

ATI on the way out (as I expect you realise) so unlikely to be that many new ones coming out.

Of the two mentioned, the Nvidia is the more powerful.

Have fun...

Sorry. That should have been "AGP on the way out".

  Stuartli 16:35 09 Mar 2006

You had me worried for a moment there...:-)

Especially as ATi keeps sending e-mails about its latest and greatest graphics cards to date...

The X850's were a fair bit cheaper (£50 or so) a couple of weeks ago... but as supply dries up, prices go up!

I think ATI's x1800 and x1900 cards are available in AGP flavour now too. If you can't stretch to a 7800 nvidia card the 6800gs might be good enough.

Must admit I was under the impression that ATI was not going to produce the X1800/1900 series of cards in AGP flavour. The only "hard" story I've read to contradict this, was about card/s being produced by Diamond Viper and this later proved to be a misprint on Diamond's WEB site. A number of other rumours are circulating on the WEB at the moment, but as far as I'm aware, that's all they are. Though be quite happy myself if they do.

I have no idea where I got that impression; maybe I caught sight of an X1600 agp card and misread it. A quick Google suggests I'm probably wrong and you're almost certainly right. If so, ATI is missing a slice of the market.

what budget do you have to play with

  billy the fish 10:41 10 Mar 2006

around £100-£150 to play with

  vinnyT 11:36 10 Mar 2006

For that kind of budget, I feel that the best card you can get is one of the ATi 800gto2 series, such as click here from scan for £127.38 Inc VAT.

These cards are amazing overclockers, so you can get more than you paid for;-) (But remember ocing will invalidate any warranties, etc.). I think the only prob, is that they have no support for SM3, no ATi cards under x1000 series have this support.

Hope this helps.
