AGP 8X sets the standard?

Why? is it really necessary to have AGP 8x? There are many games that don't need the 1024MB bandwidth that you get with AGP 4x, so why would you need 2048MB bandwidth with 8x?

At the moment benfits of 8X are yet to be seen.

Hardware has to stay ahead of software, if you think about it - if there was no hardware available for a piece of software, it couldn't be sold - the reverse is not true.
