managed to eventually sort out a xp repair for mother in law' laptop. think things started to go wrong as she had little or no protection. all she does is browse internet/shop and watch dvds photos etc. i have put on avg 8 and spyware terminator and using windows firewall. xp sp2 all updates now installed. put on ccleaner as well. do you think this is enough? these seem to all update themselves and she wont have to do much. should i put anything else on such as spybot? this seems to be quite intrusive ( popping up all time), any advice much appreciated, thanks

I'd say thats plenty, anymore and you risk it slowing down.

you missed the main ingredient (common sense)without it all your efforts will be in vain.

What you have put in place should be fine.

As from the link some of my recommendations come to mind.

AVG or Avast As your antivirus (Only One)

Windows Firewall is hopeless use Comodo Firewall You can get that from click here

Spyware Terminator (Thats fine) (Real Time Protection)

You should also install

Spyware Blaster (As A Blocker)
Super Antispyware
A-Squared

all from filehippo.com

ccleaner is not "Spyware Protection" its just a registry cleaner.

thanks for the quick replies, will probably leave it as it is and if there are further problems try another firewall, cheers
