advice on pci slots and graphic's cards

  bigface 19:31 21 Oct 2006

I've just bought a Dell dimension 3100 and thought I'd be smart by buying a graphic's card off E-bay. The PC has a PCI express slot and the card said PCI express slot, but when I recieved it and went to put it in it was totally different. I rang Dell, they informed me there are different types of PCI slots, he said I couldn't get a card for my PCI. I asked about changing the motherboard, he said I might aswell buy a new PC. So am I stuffed or is there another solution.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

First off, I like Dell because they are solid machines. I have one. the downside can in certain circumstances be that they have non standard kit that is not always interchangeable, or so it is said.

I'm afraid your story brings you to your guessed impasse.

You can't blame Dell. They like Compaq in the past and HP have their own design mobos and other major items, so your problem is not(sadly) so unusual.

There may be a work around but don't count on it.
