Are you running as Administrator ?

  brundle 17:04 24 Oct 2007

Is that the entire message? You need to track down the entry in the registry (start menu/run, type
regedit ,press return), right click and select Permissions then change Administrator permissions to Full Control (tick the Allow box). If the box is already ticked it's some other problem.

There is no need to email direct, just post your replies here so that we can all see, and have a better chance of helping you.
You say that you are running as Administrator, but look at brundle's post and follow his instructions.

have followed the response from brundle and tried it and it shows full control?

Have you tried uninstalling your old version first, and the installing 8.1.1?
I have to say that I have abandned Adobe in favour of PDF Viewer which has a much smaller footprint and is just as good.

jagman.I had trouble with Adobe reader v8. On the Adobe website "troubleshooting" there's an article ID:kb400654. I had to manually uninstall previous versions of the reader from the registry (back up first!!) It works fine now but took ages to sort out. Good luck
