Adding Symbols in Excel 97

  g0slp 15:25 22 Apr 2004

Other than copy/pasting from a Word document, does anyone know how to get symbols (such as tick marks, Greek maths symbols etc) which aren't normally on the keyboard to appear in Excel 97? A feature like the 'Insert > symbol' function in Word doesn't seem to exist in Excel.

Thanks in advance

You have to type in a suitable letter then change its font to something like Symbol. To see the equivalence between characters in different fonts you can use the Character Map (usually in Accessories/System Tools).

Excel 2003 does have Insert/Symbol.

It seems to on Excel 2003 INSERT>SYMBOL exactly as described. I`ll check an Excel 97 Machine - give me two minutes!

Thanks for response so far, chaps. '97 is what we use at work, & Company aren't going to spring for '03 just for this, I fear!

you should be able to find most of what you want by using the ALT codes (pressing & Holding ALT then using the number pad) numbers from 1 to 255 give different things.

i have them all in an excel file, if you send me an e-mail, i will send it to you.

better just say, i goto work at 1-15, return about 10-30 tonite, so might not send the file till late tonight.

i have sent the list, hope it helps

Paperman's list should go most of the way but you may need to use Vog's suggestion as well. The symbols and windings fonts give you a wider range of symbols. From Paperman's list, copy into another column then change the font to see the different characters.

Compromise solution set up & working, per VoG™, paperman27, scotty

Taff36, thanks for your input; as I said, unfortunately can't see us getting '03 just to sort this out more conveniently.

Apologies for delay in responding - there is life away from keyboards very occasionally!
