adding DDR2

I want to upgrade the memory on my pc,it currently has 256 mb of ddr2 memory and after doing the crucial test i have found that it can support 1 gig of Ram,it has two memory slots one of which is empty am i therfore better replacing the existing chip with a 1 gig chip or 2 512 gigs?

2 x 512 if your motherboard can do dual channel.

2 x 512MB - simply because if one fails the other will keep you running.

Also if your board supports Dual-Channel working, then 2x512MB will work considerable faster than a single module, as memory accesses are interleaved.
