Add USB2 to Asus A7V 266E motherboard?

Just wondering if I can upgrade my aging (26months) pc by upgrading the usb1 on my mother board to usb2? I'm sure it has a pci usb card in the back, can I swap this for a usb2 one and install the relevant drivers?
Are the usb2 ports themselves different or is it the cables that make the difference? (just thinking of the 2 front ports)

I'm running winxp, an Asus A7V 266E motherboard, athalon xp1800

Thanks

Fitting a USB 2.0 card shouldn't present a problem. If you have SP1 for XP then that provides full USB 2.0 support. Although it has been reported that USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 cables are different I actually haven't noticed a difference in speed (using benchmarking software).

I uninstalled sp1 as it slowed my pc down. Is there a specific download I should get?

I think it's KB822603

I had a quick word with a guy at PCWorld and he said that my motherboard needs to be USB2 ready for me to install USB2. Is that the case or can I just bung a pci usb2 card in there and install the drivers for it?
Cheers for your help Big Elf.

You should be able to fit a PCI USB card and install the relevant drivers. The PCWorld guy was possibly referring to the front ports already fitted to the mobo which can't be upgraded to USB 2.0.

PC world guy is not really knowledgeable on this. Just put a pci usb 2.0 card on a free pci slot, done. You can get one from ebuyer for £7.62 click here. USB 2.0 only supported by XP SP1.

I cannot understand why sp1 slow your machine down. It is strange. If you have got much ram (less than 256MB), get some from ebuyer as well, it is very cheap.

Alot of people reported problems with SP1 when it first came out. I was one of them. I ended up uninstalling it :( I have 512MB ram:)

I bit the bullet and bought a usb2 card, as it was now £20 instead of £40 and fitted it. First attempt to install crashed, then it said it had installed and to restart, so I did. Upon restarting it obviously hadn't installed, so I tried again and it worked fine. :)
