Acquiring network address

  mimosa418 10:54 26 Oct 2008

I have a PC running XP SP3 and a laptop with Vista Home Premiun SP1 connected by an Ethernet cable. Both machines recognise the other and files transfer satisfactorily. However I get a very annoying animated icon in the taskbar which indicates “acquiring network address”. Does anyone have ideas on how to stop this icon? If I open the ‘local area connection’ properties and then close it without doing anything the status immediately changes to ‘connected’ and the icon disappears but I would like a solution without always having to do this.
