Acer T180 PC Keeps Crashing

A friend asked me to look at his Acer desktop ass it was shutting down randomly!

I cleaned it out, defragged - could find nothing obvious on the event log except that some updates could not be loaded due to enexpected shutdown. I did note that there was sumantec live update as well as Macafee so I uninstalled symantec.

I did a memtest and after I realised that this was running vist with only a gig of ram. I recommended getting another gig of ram and this had made the system quicker, although it now shuts down or even has difficulty in starting up - it now can take 5 attempts!

I thought it could be a dodgy hardrive or motherboard, but I do not want to advise on a nother course of action to my mate unless I have a better understanding o what is going on.

Any ideas?

What should I do to check which hardware element it is.

I had the system shut down on me at one point when I was trying to shut multiple windows it just froze!

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

FReeezing PC

1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

2. PSU voltages

3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

4. faulty memory stick try memtest click here

5. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

6. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

1st scan for virus and malware
2nd run memtest (take out new mem first)

Take the other Ram Stick out see what its like just with the new stick

guys,

Thanks for the help

Have done full mem test but have not tried taking the one ram out - I will do that next.

Full virus scan has been done, but I will re run

I will download all drivers from Acer and install them.

All fan ducts are clear and PSU fan is working correctly. Have not checked the voltages yet. Temperature seems to be ok.

I will try all the suggestions and report back with the outcome.

Thanks to all for your prompt replies.

Cheers

Merry Christmas
