Acer memory recognition

I have an acer F1 computer with an Acer E61Ml motherboard. It is running with a kingston 512mb and an apacer 256mb pc3200 ddr400 memory modules. I purchased a 1Gb memory module from the USA to replace the 256mb module but when installed the system crashes just after windows boot. Any idea what might be amiss?

The 1GB should be seated in the first slot then the 512Mb in the second.

I would first try just the 1GB stick to see if it works, if not then I may be dud.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried it in the first slot and on its own with no luck. The manufacturers did say to set the bios to automatically find the memory and not by speed then clear the cmos. The only bios settings on this board are manual or by speed. This seems a little involved. When I installed the kingston there was no problem, it was rcognised straight away. Maybe this module is a dud as you say.
