Acer laptop memory misreporting?

My Acer Aspire 1355 laptop is running very slow and, on inspection, Windows is reporting 192MB of RAM, whereas 256MB is installed. BIOS reports 194MB, as do a couple of memory checkers. POST does not report any memory error that I can see (it's very quick), and there are no extraneous beeps. It's running XP pro SP2. Not withstanding the desirability of a memory upgrade, why is the memory misreported everywhere, and would this misreporting actually indicate that some of the RAM is not available for use? The Acer website will not permit me to submit a query on this machine! I'd be grateful for any thoughts...

It's highly likely that the missing ram has been allocated to an onboard (built in) graphics card, this is typical of laptops. Another 512mb would certainly give XP a boost in performance terms.

Probably there's 64MB of memory used out of your 256MB for onboard graphics.
