Acer DVD drive doesn't recognise Sims 3 DVD

My daughter has a new (May 09) Acer Aspire 5735z notebook running Windows Vista Home Basic. The DVD drive will play and burn DVDs OK. But she has just bought the latest Sims 3 DVD but the Acer does not recognise it when inserted. Clicking the drive from My Computer gives the message "Please insert disk". I've checked and the Acer has all the latest drivers.

When I try the DVD in my Mesh tower running XP then the DVD is recognised and I can read files using Explorer.

Can't tell if the problem is the DVD drive, disk or Vista.

Has anybody any suggestions??

Try some other commercial DVDs in the drive to see if it reads them okay and report back.

We found that there are others with this problem.

This is what we did in case it helps.

We have got it working by copying the DVD from the computer that can read it to a USB external hard drive that could hold the 6GB of files. We then loaded the files to the Acer. When we ran the Sims 3 install it started OK when the serial number was entered but it asked for the DVD to be in the drive. However, there is a file that can be downloaded that stops this. See

Still no idea why the DVD won't work in the Acer as all others are OK.
