Acer Aspire 7520 dvd drive problem

  andywolve 19:19 30 Jul 2008

Hi there,

My laptop is currently experiencing some gremlins by the look of things.

My dvd drive stopped working on Sunday, I have tried all sorts to try and sort it but to no avail. Im hoping you guys can help....
According to Bios the drive is called: optiarc DVDRWAD-75-(SM)
underneath that it said: optiarc DVDRWAD 7506A-P
I have tried to reboot
I went into the bios, with it not being listed, neither is it listed in the device manager, system diagnostics, my computer, etc.
I have followed a walk trhough to get it back - deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry editor.

Before I went into the regedit, it came back in the bios - hope thats a good sign.

If I enter a disc, it lights up, tries to load, (hearing it whirl away)

To no avail, i dont know what to do, apart from to install a driver, but according to google search, you dont have to do that in Windows Vista

I know you have said you checked for the upper and lower filters,but here is an easy to follow process;

Missing cd/dvd drives can be normally associated with the removal of burning software such as Nero/Roxio/Sonic/Easy CD Creator etc.
And not showing the drive in My Computer.

Try the below link ,if still no luck follow the Procedure of removing the upper and lower filters.

If no joy with the above fix,try the Microsoft Guided Help

click here scroll down to the Guided help download and follow the instructions.

If still no joy, follow the manual fix below.

If you have further any error codes, please post them.

Restore Missing CD/Dvd Drives

Missing cd/dvd drive
If it is showing an error code:
Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
, delete the drive.

Then follow these directions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters: (might want to print this out)

1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key ( if Vista Start search or windows+R )
2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or
3. clicking the "+" next to it.)
4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer

.If in any doubt editing the registry, please create a System Restore point first and also backup your registry....The guidedhelp from Microsoft on backing up the registry is a good lesson for anyone to learn. click here

Creating a System Restore point:

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore…follow the prompts.

If still no joy,post back

Have you tried starting the Laptop with a Bootable CD. If it goes to it you can stop it loading but you will know that the drive is OK

  woodchip 19:48 30 Jul 2008

Don't forget you will need to set CD as first boot device in BIOS save before exit

i tried that application to get windows explorer to display the drive - good news and bad news, it appeared at start up, but then I tried to access it and then it disappeared with an error, saying it no longer existed. odd.

already deleted the registry, however i didnt have the lowerfilters mentioned. odd!

havent got a bootable cd?!

dont understand why it would fail though whilst i was using it?!

If the drive is appearing and disappearing, you may have a faulty connection.
You should also consider the drive maybe on its way out.

ah ok fair enough

i know how to do it on desktop pcs, but not on laptops - how can i change the drive? where to buy a new drive from. I feel confident to do it myself.

click here download this zip file extract and run it.

will make a better job of removing the upper and lower filters (even the ones you can't see)
