Access/word and mail merge problem

I'm using an access database to create a mail merge in word 2003 for reminding customers of an approaching appointment. I'm having a problem with the "date" field from the database remaining in the correct format dd/mm/yyyy when merged into the word doc instead of remaining in the format as above (as in access) it changes to the american format mm/dd/yyyy. I've checked regional and language options are set to uk english. Anybody have any suggestions
