Is A8N-SLI Premium compatible with Athlon 64 6000?

My desktop has an Asus A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 Motherboard with an Athlon 64 4600 CPU which has worked fine for over a year. I decided it was about time to upgrade, so I have bought an Athlon 64 6000 CPU, however, having tried to fit it, it doesn't seem to locate properly, the dimensions are the same but the areas on the CPU where there are no pins seem slightly different. Can anyone please confirm if this processor should fit this board or am I missing something?

It appears your board is of the Socket 939 variety, your new chip is of the most recent AM2 variety, which has 940 pins, but is not the same as the Socket 940 - no go.

Brundle - thanks for that - eventually found a table of Athlon CPUs on Wikipedia which confirms that the Athlon 64 4600 is socket 939 but the Athlon 64 6000 is socket AM2 oh ************! Still- good excuse to upgrade to an AM2 board I guess!!
