I have installed a USB 2.0 card but I cannot install the driver for it. It starts to install then stops with the message "severe. Unable to USB device ID"

Any help appreciated.

As far as i am aware W98 does not support USB2 only USB1,this OS is now coming to the end of it's days as regards support and updates.

Win98SE does support USB2 with the manufacturers drivers.

Can you provide more infoamtion about the card and the PC? Make / model etc

Many thanks PaulB2005 i stand corrected.

There is a driver download for USB on the Microsoft website the file is Umss.exe.

  PaulB2005 19:55 11 Dec 2005

It's nothing to do with your problem. It's a sample USB Mass Storage Driver.

Ignore it.

The card is an APM PCI USB 5 Ports. The driver is on a mini CD.

The computer is a Gateway, 1999, Pentium 111 650 mhz processor, 512mb RAM.

What did the manual advise you do?

Install the card and the the drivers?

Or install the drivers and then the card?

---
Can you browse the CD and see all the files?

Describe the events as Windows tries to install the card and give the EXACT error messages please.

Only way you will get 98se to run USB2 is if you have Via,SIS, or Intel chipset check this out near bottom of page click here

There was another page but think it's on other computer bookmarks. Forgot to say SIS do not support USB2 for Win98se, it is Ali that does
