that is right, you never will get the full amount, once it has been formatted.

  woodchip 22:47 16 Jan 2006

Yes that's about the right size for a 80gb drive

  woodchip 22:50 16 Jan 2006

Drive manufacturers now use the 1000mb as 1Gb it's not. its 1024mb. and formating does not make any difference. It's just how they call there drive size now

a 80gb hard drive formats to 75gb or just under. its all down to the manufactures listing a mb as 1000 kbytes but in reality its 1024 kbytes (1000 mb = 1gb makers... reality 1024mb = 1gb). it wasn't noticed in the old days when hard drives were less than 10 gig so much but as they are getting bigger, you do (my 250gb formats to 232gb).

hi thanks to all that replied

And - formatting does not lose any capacity on the drive - the manufacturers quoted capacity is the formatted capacity.

It might ba argued that a minute amount is lost to partitioning overheads, but it's a really tiny amount - totally insignificant.

At the risk of being thought pedantic, it's best to use the correct terminology when referring to capacities, to avoid confusion :- see click here

GB = gigabyte

MB = megabyte

kB = kilobyte

m = milli

b = bit

g has no meaning as an abbreviated quantity prefix

It's also not true that all refernces to kilo for data means 1024 - it's never so in data transmission - 56.6kbps is really 56,600kbps.

Sorry should read 56.6kbps is really 56,600bps.

Is that what they call political correctness

  Stuartli 23:24 16 Jan 2006

No, pulling the wool over your eyes or clever selling methods...:-)

Bit like politicians really - you know the ones I'm talking about....:-)
