80 GB hard drive reads 497GB ?

hI I heve just formated a Western Digital Hard Drive 80 Gigabyte 7200 rpm . on checking drive i find i have 74.67gb physical.but497gb logical.
how is this posible .
so far i have loaded 40gb of video on the drive it workes no problem'
have i found new way to get extra bg ?

The 497 is almost certainly just a Windows reporting glitch which you can ignore, you've definitely only got the 74.67.

Certain combinations of software/hardware can cause this sort of thing, for example one setup of mine used to report hard drive data transfer forecast times that would alternate randomly between a few seconds and millions of minutes while performing perfectly to spec. Just another Windows "peculiar".

Could it also be that file compression is switched on? I haven't used it before so I don't know how much extra space it gives but this may be an alternative reason.
