I have an Athlone 64 bit 3500 PC.

When I downloaded a 64 bit program, and when I tried to install it ,I was told it was not compatible.
When I downloaded the 32 bit version it worked.Why.

The deciding factor for programs is the operating system. You may have a 64 bit CPU but you must be running normal Windows XP which is 32 bit. If you want to run 64 bit programs then you need to be running Windows XP Pro x64 which is the 64 bit version of the OS.
