512 sdram reported as 511?

  BrianW 13:31 11 Feb 2003

Running win 98se with duron 750 on a QDI kinetiz 7b board. Just added a second strip of 256 mb 133 sd-ram, making 512 in total. AIDA-32 reports as 512 mb ram and records each strips properties correctly but my "computer / properties" reports as it as 511mb. Doesn't seem to be a problem but I am intrigued to know why. Can anybody shed any light on this? ;>{}

Shouldn't worry about it

normally gets allocated to video memory i think unless your using a graphics card with lot of memory.

i mean if you have a graphics card with more memory you'll be able to use the entire amount of RAM. previously when i used a 16mb graphics card windows used to display 510 mb of RAM available but after upgrading to a 64 mb one, it shows 512 mb available

I think the ram chips are slightly less than 256 (ie 255 plus a percentage - that rounded up gives 256). One of the measures is rounding up hence 512 and the other rounding down giving the 511 figure.

According to my System Properties I'm running 523,740 with 2 sicks of 256 DDR!

that comes to 511.48 mb ;o)

maybe this was what dth was trying to tell us?

how come mine reports it as 512 then????

Ravin - thanks, I've got a 64mb DDR ram card - so think its unlikely that its pinching the extra meg. dth - you could be right. Oh well, any system that expects you to type "Ctrl/Alt/Del" to reboot can't be expected to be logical I suppose - thnaks for the responses, Brian. ;>}}
