500GB Freeze

  Scubaman 16:48 10 Jul 2008

Hi I have installed a 500 GB HDD to save home movies to for editing. Everything started out ok, but now the post screen freezes when it comes to the 500 GB drive. I restarted 3 or 4 times and it was ok, but then not at all even in safe mode or BIOS. I have XP Home SP3, 2GB memory 3Mhz chip. I have disconnected the HDD and all is ok. Any ideas please?

Is the drive formatted in NTFS?
Is this an internal drive? SATA or IDE?

might try defragging it as the bigger the drive the more often it seems to need it least mines does

It is formatted in NTFS and has nothing on it as it is a brand new ATA. Do you need to defrag a new drive as well as formatting it?

Check the jumper settings, if it's not sata it needs to be set to slave.

Check that the PSU is large enough to power the extra hard drive.
