5+ Gb somewhere on hard drive

  hamunaptra 14:42 16 Jan 2009

I recently reinstalled my windows XP as my previous install was riddled with *[email protected]:e. I have a E-machines E4056. I formated the drive with both the killdisk and then the xp installation disk, but on both occasions it said i had 74 something GB, the drive is a 80gb drive. It does not have an hidden operating system, so can someone help me to regain my missing GB please.

None missing. Manufacturers describe 1gb as 1,000,000 bytes so your drive is never actually 80gb to start with. Formatting takes up more space for file allocation tables etc. and you are left with 74gb.

Due to how windows is install on the hard drive on a 80Gb drive you do not get 80Gb showing

80Gb it will show as 74.5Gb

20Gb will show as 18.6Gb, 40Gb will show as 38.2GB, 160GB will show as 149Gb
