Generally yes, I have an agp 8 ti4200 in an agp 4 motherboard.

The voltages for 4x are higher than 8x but not too much USUALLY for this. You should ALWAYS check your motherboard manual to make sure really first though.

Generally you should have no problem. Just be aware though that if you invest in a very fast new card the 4x agp slot may slow it down a little.

I had a chaintech motherboard (AGP 4x) and upgraded my gfx card to a abit 256mb 5600, when playing games the system would crash, so I brought a new mobo (AGP 8x) works like a dream (or I might just have been an unlucky git)

hi hairyplums i know you cant use a 4x on a 8x board due to the voltage, the 8x uses a lower voltage than the 4x.i would have thought if you put a 8x in a 4x board it could damage the card due to it getting more voltage than it needs.

I used an 8x agp geforce fx5900 on a 4x agp equiped m/board, before later replacing the M/board, with no problems at all.
