2 Hard Drives are not found on start up

  exbrat67 21:28 17 Jul 2003

Running xp sr1.with 40 and 80 gig drives.
neither drive is recognised on start up so windows will not load.
Have checked,
1. Power supply to both drives is OK.
2. Changed IDE cable
3. Used drve manufacturers DOS diagnostic programme,no hard drives found.
4. Used XP repair option on system disk, no hard drives found.
5. CMOS does not show drives and auto function fails to find drives.
I suspect that the trouble is a faulty Motherboard - unless someone knows another reason

Hav you tried them one at a time - one faulty one can kill detection of both sometimes.

Hav they ever worked? It would be odd for both to have failed at the same time, so you are right to suspect the motherboard.

Check cable is on the right way round red tracer next to power plug red wire, check jumpers are set to master and slave if on the same cable do not use cable select. Check bios do an auto detect in bios. Do Not set to auto

Sorry for delay in reply due to computer down. Both drives working for months. One drive was faulty and as you suggested it killed detection of both drives. Sorted now, Thanks!
