I heard you can text, for free from your email, does anyone know of a way to do this?

Quick Google hit this click here - never used it or heard of anyone using it - so comes with no recommendation either way

Over here in Ireland with the meteor network prefix 085 you can from your email do the following:

A: [email protected] sends a picture or text of more than 160 charachters

B: [email protected] sends a SMS.

This solution depends of course on the network of the receiving phone. Not easy in these days of 1 hour number portability

You may be thinking of the O2 service which you can use to send text messages to mobiles:

Stuartli:

That service appears to be available only for people who have O2 mobile phones.

You might be right. I used to use it a lot when it was Genie (or something similar) and you could send text/SMS messages for free to any mobile.

I've always been with Virgin Mobile...:-)

I seem to remember you could send e-mails as well, but at my age the old memory cannot be relied on to the same extent...:-(

If you use click here as the URL it takes you to the O2 website.....

Stuartli:

Just registered with O2 and you get 10 free text messages.

ps: I am with Vodafone.
