Is it possible to record television programmes on to a laptop by hooking up to an actual television, if so what is exactly required?

No. You need (at least with a laptop) one of the Freeview USB TV sticks which normally come with PVR software; a desktop would be used with either a Freeview PCI TV card or a USB stick.

This allows recording of TV programmes in similar fashion to the PVR recorders used with normal televisions.

You will need, of course, to provide a good quality TV aerial signal to the TV card or USB stick - I use an aerial amplifier to provide an aerial feed from the main roof aerial for my PCI card.
