Sony RDR HXD870B recorder won't record SKY.

Sky set top box/ Panasonic TX-26LXD70 T.V. + the Sony recorder.
I can record analogue and freeserve o.k although poor local reception results in poor quality recordings, and so its important to be able to record Sky programs.
Sky program reception is o.k. but I'm unable to record Sky with this recorder.
I believe that after weeks of perseverence the connections and settings are o.k. but as an ancient illiterate on this subject I have to wonder is it me or the recorder.
Can anyone help please ?

With my Sony[ and they do seem a bit obtuse compared with other brands] My freeserve box has to go to L4 which is a RCA set. and set top box[SKY?] goes to L3[SCART} any good to you?

make sure the sky box is plugged into L1 SCART using a fully wired SCART to SCART connector. If you already have this try reversing the lead (sky end in the sony and vice versa.

You will have to select the L1 input on the Sony

The diagram is on page 17 of the manual here:

look also at page 136 and check that the input setting for video on the Sony are the same as the output of the SKY (which as far as i recall is composite or RGB only)
