setting up a sky box

  sunnystaines 08:46 23 Sep 2009

is it just plug in the scart and dish lead then look to see which channel number its installed on or more to it.
been asked to help some one with no manual and taking over box and dish from prev owner in home move.

will be using just the free sky channels.

unable to use the freeview option on the tv as the auto scan is greyed out so i presume not in freeview area.

As long as the dish/LNB and cables are OK connect cable and scart lead to box and the plug into mains leave it for 2-3 mins before switching sky box on. If everything is OK you should get the freesat channels. If it's a sky box you may be missing channel 5 if you do not have a sky card.

If you are getting no channels press services/4/6 on remote this will tell you if you have a signal.

"...was not sure how to allocate sky to a tv channel"

If you use a SCART cable, it's not on a channel. It's on one of the AV inputs (sometimes called Ext for external). You don't have to tune these in - they just need to be selected.

In fact normally most TVs will automatically switch to the correct AV input once there is an active signal on it (ie when the Sky box is switched on).

Only connect or disconnect the dish cable when the Skybox is unplugged from the mains - this minimises the chance of damage through accidental shorts as you connect it.

Also check the connector on the dish cable to make sure it's firmly screwed on to the cable, and that there is no obvious short between the centre of the cable and the braiding.
