Lithium-ion batteries have a large storage capacity, and can be re-charged quickly. Their other main advantage is the size, they are flat and slim compared to AA batteries. Therefore they use less space which enables the camera body to be slimmer.

We recently bought a Pentax Optio S7 which has a Lithium-ion battery, the battery can be recharged via the external charger in 100 minutes, but has to be removed from the camera first. But I think you can buy as an extra an adaptor cable, this enables the battery to be charged in-situ.

I thought I had posted!!! But thanks all. IN one of the links the reason given seems to say that it's because folk wil gwr confused and use a wrong charger and set fire to whatever. Surely it's saying computer and photographers are stupid. All seems a bit nannyish
