Do I need a PVR or media PC?

  Christopher Lewis 15:20 06 Jan 2008

I have a PC on which I can download TV programmes (BBC iPlayer etc.) and with a DVD drive, so I can rip DVDs.

I have a TV set I'm happy with. I want to watch the downloaded/ripped programmes on my TV. I assume I need some sort of box which connects to my home network, and also to the TV. This is where my current knowledge fails. What is the box I need, and what would be a good choice?

BBC iPlayer has protected Content (Scrambled).

I think this is what you want

you save your files onto it, and then plug it into your tv.

Note. You will need to add a 3.5" hard drive into it...

If you have a wireless router, Linksys (see their website) have a nice new combined DVD player / Media Centre Extender . You plug this device into your TV and you can use it to either play DVDs or get TV programmes or other media wirelessly from your PC. I am not sure of the code, think it is D?? 2200. About £220 so not cheap! Maybe easier to get a DVD recorder with Freeview for the TV and forget the computer! Alternatively just get a cheap DVD player for the TV and watch your DVDs burnt on the computer.

Thanks for the ideas. I notice that the TV downloads systems require Windows XP or Vista.

I think I'll wait for more convergence...
