This post should really be in the helproom forum rather than consumerwatch.
You must make sure your motherboard takes the CPU and memory that you have chosen for it.
And consider this: What is the point in getting a sound card with 2.1 speakers? - you might as well have a motherboard with onboard sound and save some money.
It's the same story with the graphics - a quality 22" monitor and a slightly cheaper graphics card makes more sense to me than a cheapo monitor and nice graphics card.
Cosnumerwatch is the palce to ask these questions. The Q9650 (3.0GHz) is overpriced when you can get the Q9550 (2.83GHz) for around £230 and overclock it slightly (6%) to get the same performance. If you do go for the Q9550 then try and get the E0 stepping version).
Have you got a link to the system?
Consumerwatch and place were what I meant (obviously).
if it is a gaming rig you could use faster HD's click here yes i know they are more expensive, but performance comes with a price
you have 7.1 onboard sound why the sound card? why 2.1 speakers, when you could have 5.1 speakers click here
save yourself some money and buy vista premium.
the case has a big fan drawing air in but what is venting the hot air out?
as Grantrh said get a bigger monitor, a good monitor will last thru several pc's. i would suggest a duel monitor setup but again thats more expence.
Raptors/VelociRaptors are not worth the extra premium. I have a VelociRaptor and 2 Samsung F1's and the difference in performance is 6% which is undectectable in normal use
CPU Q9650 - way overpriced. You could get away with one that costs much less. E.g. like a Q6600 for £127 click here - that's even if you don't overclock. As this PC is mostly for gamimg, an E8500 click here will do better than a Q6600. (If overclocking any of them, get a good after-market cooler).
If you must buy a GTX 280, get it from Scan click here - scroll lower down for the Leadtek. Not Evga, but £80 less for a negligible fall in performance.
Any particular reason for Vista Ultimate? Compare versions here click here. I feel Premium will be enough.
Agree about the faster raptor hard drives - not worth the premium.
Agree about the the soundcard too. But if playing online FPS-type games with good headphones/surround speakers, they say a Xtreme Gamer is ideal.
With money saved above, go for a BETTER:
- Case, with proper cooling & one that'll last, like an Antec 900 click here
- PSU, like a Corsair 750W TX click here
- RAM, for only £8 more click here
- Monitor, like a 22" one, as already suggested. One for ~£130 click here will be enough. If 22" is too large (some people have a problem), get a better quality 19/20" monitor for ~£100-120
- Keyboard & mouse, especially for gaming
