URGENT!! Avast anti-virus: Is it actually a virus?

I recently downloaded and installed an anti-virus program called avast, which was reccommended to me by my friend's father who has been working with computers for quite some time. It can be found here: click here . After watching it block most of my programs from accessing the internet, I decided it best to remove the program from my computer. After doing so I rebooted, and can no longer access the internet. I have a DSL connection, that connects, but none of my programs (AOL Instant Messenger, Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser)), can access the internet. Could it be that avast could possibly still have registry keys, or that avast is actually a virus? I'm not an expert, but I know that there aren't many viruses that shut down your entire LAN. Please, somebody HELP!!!

AVAST! AV is NOT a virus. Many people here use it because it sits in the background, auto updates itself and it's definitions and it WORKS.

There must be another reason for your problems.

Just incase you are infected by something else, download AVAST! cleaner and run it to see what it can find. If it does find something you will be able to get rid of it.

Hope this helps.

System restore prior to downloading the programme.

"block most of my programs from accessing the Internet"

Which programs ? the only program I've ever heard it having compatibility issues with was msgtag. It's a very good AV package that shouldn't be preventing anything from accessing the net.

Are you running zone alarm with service pack 2.I did't think av could block internet accsess .that's the firewall's job. (and microsofts)
