You can buy Canon flatbed scanners for prices starting lower than £46 from outlets such as Dabs, including these models:

Canon scanners are slimline, accurate and provide good software - mine Lide20 - takes power from PC via the USB socket so doesn't need an external power adaptor. It’s a really decent scanner with noone of the installation vices I have experienced from other brands – try ebuyer.com for decent prices about £36 inc VAT

A friend got one just after (before?) Christmas and it came with a film scanner; that was what made it worth the price as I saw it. Works pretty well, all told.
