Online retailer Scan of Bolton has provided some interesting reading in the form of its stock and price lists from the mid-1990s.

Scan was the first to launch a TodayOnly page, an idea which has since been widely copied.

The lists will provide a useful guide to just how much progress has been made with regard to computer technology and, equally, how much more we get today for a lot less Sterling.

We really do get a lot for our money these days, my 486 DX2 66 with 2xCD-ROM and 8Mb of RAM in 1995 was around £1,500!

£425 for a 2x CD writer! Crikey.

Mind you, my Dad always used to pay for the computer ;)

I bought a Pentium 100 system in March 1996 with all the bells and whistles (for that particular period) for £1,303 - I'm sure you are talking about an earlier year than 1995...:-)

My son was at uni on an IT course in the late 1980s and early 1990s and each of his three computer systems purchased during that time cost him (or me rather!) around £1,000 - a lot of money at that time but you have to look after the young, the future of our country!
