Plus Net broadband fiasco

I just tried to cancel my Plus Net broadband package.

When I singed up the telesales guy said clearly that if I was to cancel within the period of the one year, then all I would have to pay would be cost of the modem. Thats all.
I made sure I asked that question because I knew I was just wanting 5 months or so.

Now I get an email from them saying I have to pay £149 to cancel which is payment to end of year.

Anyone have any advice, or has similar experience?
