Pc upgrade time again

  bolo 19:00 17 Sep 2006

I want to upgrade my pc, had this one a couple of years, I like playing games so everything getting a bit ropey now (System- 3200xp, Abit An7 with geforce 6600GT).
Looking for advice on which mobo, cpu and ram to buy.
Would ideally want dual core amd 4600, 1.5/2Gb ram and a graphics card priced at less than £200.

Where i'm struggling is this; Everything needs to work together out of their boxes, as I have heard the Ram on AM2 systems is tempremental on which mobo it will run on.

Alternatively would go for socket 939 amd in any case does any one know which combinations of board/ram and cpu make stable housemates. Asus, Abit are my usual favs

Any advice on a upgrade around this sort of spec appreciated.

ditching socket 939 and trying one of the new intel dual core duo 2 CPUS and motherboard. You could even keep your graphics card for the time being as the 6600GT isn't all that bad...

If I go with socket 939, am I right in thinking I could have a amd dual core 4600 and still use my existing ram (1.5 Ghz pc3200 400mhz Crucial)I want to really keep under £400 inc graphics card.
Another question is; dual core processors do they really improve performance in all games or just games and apps made to take advantage of them.
Could I use my existing ram in a intel core duo as well?

If you go socket 939,yes you can use dual core CPU's and yes you can use your ram, if you go down the AM2 or core duo route you cannot as it requires DDR2 ram.

Forgot to say, games and applications have to be written for dual processors to take advantage of them, but you can have a lot more applications open.

Sorry but I have to say I just laughed when I saw:

"verything getting a bit ropey now (System- 3200xp, Abit An7 with geforce 6600GT)"

I can run HL2 just about reasonably on a system I have had since 1999:

PIII 650 Mhz
384mb SDRAM
64mb Creative GeForce 4 Ti4200
And fairly stock other components for their time (It wasn't a custom build)

That's getting ropey! But then again as I said it runs HL2 (just not the Lost Coast High Def bit!)
