Speaking for a friend who doesn't want to have to call premium rate number has a Packard Bell where the Pre-Installed WinXP Home software has become corrupt beyond recover thanks to their other family member.
The computer is under a 1 year warranty, but my friends question is:
Is the pre-installed Windows & Software covered under warranty ?
Most recent Packard Bell machines have an on board recovery option. This will allow you to 'reset' the machine back to it's factory settings, and undo the corruptions caused by the family member.
When you turn the PC on, repeatedly tap the F11 key (or possibly the F10 key). This should boot you into the recovery menu.
If you use the 'non-destructive' option you should be able to restore windows without losing your data, or failing that choose the 'destructive' option under the advanced tab. However you will lose all of your data and settings as the macine will be fully reset to factory settings.
It is advisable to back up your personal data, and make a note of any usernames and passwords before actioning the restore.
& Dizzy Bob, the Recovery options will not start because the person installed or tried to install a other copy of XP on the system and its total goosed. But I am going to try and repair the Boot Record later (fixboot) which is a last resort.
I see many times where friends have tampered and goosed up there systems to no return.
Daft thing is even though heavy virus infections before that were removed then the guy ran the Disk Defrag then installed a Dell XP Pro disk over and zilch boot.
you will need new recovery media as you have screwed up the partion by installing xp over the top you need to call pb and pay for recovery cds as you have deleted the partition call pb 08705133332 unless you format and partition the old drive with a win 98 boot disk and install xp pro on it
