I have just bought a 250GB Freecom USB2 Hard drive and find that the boot up time has markedly increased if I boot with the drive plugged in. Would it be better to boot and then plug in? Its really only for back up and long term storage of scanned material. Im running a 2100MHz Pentium 4 with 2GB memory and two internal drives of 40 and 17 GB. The USB2 connection is via a cheapo 4port hub which is difficult to get to, which is why I left the drive plugged in. Also transferring 16Gb of data from one internal drive to the external drive took 3 hours. Is this a typical transfer rate for such a process, or have I got it set up wrongly?
