Hello, I am planning to build a new pc. With a intel core 2 quad Q6600 processor, and a asus striker extreme (nforce 680i sli) motherboard.I am also looking to get a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card.
My memory will be either Corsair Dominator 2048mb xm52-8500 - 1066MHz
or 2GB OCZ Reaper.

I am struggling to pick a graphics card and was wondering if you could help me, i do not want to spend alot. I am currently looking at the following graphics cards:
nvidea 8600 gts
nvidea 8600 gt
xfx nvidea 8800gt
radeon x1950 pro
sapphire/asus radeon x1950 xt

please could you tell me which is the best performing in that list, and anymore that are decent. I am looking to do photo editing, downloading, playing music and films on the pc.

If you feel that any other components could be replaced with better please say so.

Thankyou for your help

Sorry not the xfx 8800gt, meant 8600

8800gt is the best but as you are not going to play games 8600gt will do.

As you're not playing games, save even more & go for a 8400 click here / 2400 click here series card instead. The 'older' generation cards would do fine too. G

Seems like a pretty decent set up but why then scrimp on the graphics card?

I have just got a 8800GT and it is fantastic for the money so if you can afford it do not hesitate and get this card.

It should play any games for a good while to come so you can safely purchase any software you fancy..

cheers

If you do play games then the 8800GT if not for what you list you could buy a much cheaper card and it would make no difference whatsoever.

Its up to you really, I play games so if I had the cash I would get a 8800GT but if you don't theres little point as for photos, music and videos a top of the line graphics card will make no difference at all. You would be wasting your money really.

"what graphics card would you reccomend for photos, music and videos then? i was thinking a radeon x1950 xt" - that's complete overkill for what you're going to do with it. As T-b mentions it won't make any difference & will be a waste of money IMO.

See my earlier post too - a 8400GS for £20-30 would be more than adequate. G

"If you feel that any other components could be replaced with better please say so."

For what you're going to use it for most can be replaced with lesser components. You could save £250-300 on the quad-core CPU, premium motherboard+RAM & still have a very good system - some suggested alternatives:

* £77 Intel E4300 click here (very overclockable if you want to go down that route - get a aftermarket cooler, e.g. click here)
* £59 MSI P35 Neo-F click here
* £39 OCZ 2GB Kit PC2-6400 PLATINUM XTC click here

The soundcard is a good choice & I wouldn't change that. Get good speakers to go with it though.

You can always add a very good gaming-grade graphics card in the future when you become a keen gamer. So overall that's a £300-400 saving on your original spec!

Last but not least get a good quality 500-600W PSU. G

i was thinking a thermalright cooler like the thermalright ultra-120 extreme, with a decent fan

arctic cooling freezer 7 pro costs only about £14 and is better than the coolers costing a lot more. you can overclock 6600 quad to 3.4 no problem. recommended by custom pc mag elite list.
