New law helps consumers get an easier refund

At last some good news for consumers. As of next Tuesday a change in the law will mean consumers have a far greater chance of a refund, a replacement or a repair for sub-standard goods.

The EU directive ensures it won't be necessary to prove the item was broken when it was purchased - the onus will be on the retailer to show it was in full working order when sold. (and silly little disclaimers won't help them).

Also, in a further change to legislation, guarantees are to be legally binding regardless of the wording.

About time too.

the new legislation only applies to the first six months after purchase - after that the onus of proof reverts to the consumer, as is the case at present.
